Reasons to Install a Dimmer

Do you have dimmer switches installed for your light fixtures? Do they seem like a waste to you? You’d be surprised how useful dimmers can be. We’ve listed out a few benefits to installing dimmer switches in your home:

  1. Dimmers can help save energy

Yes, when you dim the output of light of your fixture, you are using less energy. Less energy usage = lower energy bills!

  2. Dimmers help extend bulb life

The less energy you use (see #1) the longer your bulb will also last. The less stress applied (less energy) to a filament in a bulb, the longer it will last. This is even true with energy efficient bulbs, which helps offset the cost of these more expensive options. Energy efficient bulbs already last a long time, but when you combine them with a dimmer, they’ll last even longer!

  3. Dimmer switches are good to the environment

Less energy spent AND longer living consumables is always better for the environment!

  4. Dimmers have been proven to help with health issues.

Artifical light has been known to effect our sleep cycles and disrupt Circadian rhythms. Dimming the light you’re exposed to decreases these effects and can mimic what’s happening outside. If you dim your lights at night, after the sun goes down, your body will have an easier time adjusting.

  5. Dimmers can help a room look more inviting and cozy!

Rooms that have dimmer light often look more cozy, inviting and even more romantic. Dimmers can help you prepare the meal with bright light and serve it in an inviting atmosphere with dim light!

  6. Dimmers can help people look better

Dim warm light can make you look good! There’s a reason the most romantic and high end restaurants pay attention to lighting. Think candlelight – there’s nothing more flattering than warm dim light!

  7. Dimmers are inexpensive and easy to install

Many people think they need a degree in electrical engineering to instal a dimmer. Dimmers sold today are as easy to install as a standard toggle switch. Instructions are easy to follow and they’re inexpensive!

What are you waiting for? Any room can be transformed into a versatile space with the installation of a dimmer switch. Our expert lighting staff in Bellevue and Seattle can help you pick out the right dimmer switches for your home, so call or stop by today!

Happy Thanksgiving!

giveThanksOur Harold’s Lighting family wants to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving! We hope you’re able to enjoy time with family and friends and take time to think about what you’re grateful for.

If you’re hosting the party this year, don’t forget about your dining room lighting options! Now is the time to use your dimmer, and if you’re feeling extra festive, add a few candles for a really cozy atmosphere!

Depending on how large the space is, the use of layers of lighting styles may be effective, however, now is not the time to blast your guests with tons of light! Set your fixtures to provide enough light for you to safely serve and eat food, but not much more.

Lower levels of light are typically more flattering and create a warmer and cozy feel.

turkeyCookedRemember that Thanksgiving is one of the most dangerous holidays for a variety of different reasons. Not only is it dangerous to be traveling on the roads during this time, but accidents in the home peak during this holiday. Keep an eye on your kitchen! Fires, injuries and kitchen accidents easily happen when too many people are involved or when the space isn’t conducive to the activities performed. Prepare food ahead of time if you can, and keep a schedule and an extra eye on anything cooking.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving! We’re thankful for the opportunity to provide the Greater Seattle area with the best lighting options and services.

Eat up!

Here’s a video from a few weeks back of Tiffany, at our Seattle lighting store, working on a new custom project:

Tiffany is making some natural wood finials. She’s attaching the wood to bases of antique brass, silver and more!

Finials are the pieces that go at the top of a lamp to fasten the shade and the base together. Changing up your finial can be a great way to freshen up your fixture! Traditional finials are just caps that match the finish of the fixture but you can get them in crystal, seashell, wood, or just about any shape, symbol or finish!

Here some images of our finial case at our Seattle lighting store:

Fall is here! Easy tips to make your home feel more like Autumn!

The end of September marks the birth of Fall for 2017. A new season is a new opportunity to switch things up around your home. Below are a few tips to make your home feel more warm and ready for winter.

Change up the lighting.

Fall weather, especially in the Pacific North West, is naturally darker. You may need to consider adding more light to rooms that you frequently use. The easiest way to do this by adding a table lamp or floor lamp. Harold’s Lighting has lamps of all sizes, shapes, colors and styles to suit any décor.

Scent

Memories of fall comes with many delicious smells. Create an autumn wonderland in your home simply by making your home smell like fall. Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon, Clove, Orange Spice, and Gingerbread are all classic smelling fall flavors. You can permeate your space with these amazingly warm and inviting smells by using essential oils, candles, sprays or with baking.

Pillows and Blankets

Adding new throw blankets to your living room couches or pillows help create a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere. Makes me want to settle in with a book just thinking about it!

Fall is fun! It’s the birth of the holiday season for the year and celebrating the changing of the seasons is easy to do around your home.

End of Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

Summer is coming to an end. School is back in and people’s routines go back into order. Before you’ve got your day scheduled out and on autopilot you may want to take a minute to prepare your home for the changes ahead.

Summer, contrary to what you may think, can take a toll on the exterior of your home. Summer storms can be extremely volatile and extreme heat can dry out seals and damage roofing. Also, preparing your home for fall rain and harsh winters is very important.
Here is a quick list of things you should check out before fall sets in:

1.     Gutters – clean your gutters and check for any clogs. Rain is coming and it’s a whole lot easier to clean out dry debris than it will be when everything gets soggy.

2.     Windows – give your windows a good cleaning and while you’re at it, check for any breaks in seals. Repairing small window seal cracks is pretty easy with caulk, but if your cracks are large, you may need to replace the sealant, which is important to do to keep water out and heat in when winter rolls around.

3.     Siding – Check out the siding on your home. Look for any bubbles, ripples, or blistering paint. Fix any pieces that look amiss now, before the rain comes. Water damage can turn into a huge problem and even rock the foundation of your home.

4.     Roof – Inspect your roof. Summer storms and extreme heat can take a toll on your roof, no matter what kind you have. Check for any damage or weak points and have them inspected now.

5.     Outdoor Furniture/Cooking – clean and safely store your outdoor furniture and cooking appliances (grill).

6.     Lighting – clean any exterior light fixtures by either dusting off or washing down. Stock up on any light bulbs you think you may need for your interior/exterior light fixtures.

There are many other things you can do to prepare for the upcoming months, but these are the big ones! Keep your home in tip top condition by regularly performing small maintenance tasks.

Table Lamp Rules

Finding the right table lamp can be almost as difficult as choosing what color to paint your walls. When you bring home the one you picked one out it just seems a little too small or somewhat out of place. Knowing what to look for before you shop is the key to making this process go smoothly.

Stained Glass Lamp
Beautiful Stained Glass Lamp at Harold’s Lighting

Typically, most interior designers say to find a table lamp that is around 30 inches tall. This is from the bottom of the base to the top of the actual shade. If you really want to get an accurate measurement, you’ll want to pick a lamp that is around 58-64 inches from the ground in the room you’re looking to place it in. So you’ll want to measure the distance between the height of the table and the ground, then use the difference to find the height of lamp to look for.

Once you get the measurements down, the lamp shade should sit at about eye level for the average person. This will help diffuse direct light to the eye by still shedding enough light on items below the shade.

The width of the lamp can vary quite a bit, and typically just comes down to your preferred style. A skinnier lamp is a bit more delicate while a wide base can look modern and sturdy. Typically the wider the better, but you don’t want to overwhelm the table space with too much lamp. Most designers stick to shades no larger than half the table width.

Harold’s Lighting showrooms in Seattle and in Bellevue have tons of lamp bases and shades to choose from. If you’re unable to find the right size lamp we can custom make one for you from scratch, or out of just about anything you bring in. Stop on by and check us out today!
