Lighting Tips – Room by Room

Not all rooms are treated equally in the eyes of an interior designer. Especially when lighting is being considered. Special attention needs to be given to each space. Layers of light sources are typically used in every room, but the overall goals may be different. Below is a few tips to keep in mind when thinking about the lighting in each room.

DINING ROOM

The dining room table should be the focus. Light should be used to draw people in. Placing a light directly above the table will help bring the focus to the center and using a dimmer can help create a mood.

KITCHEN

As Americans, we spend a ton of time in room. Preparing food, eating food, and cleaning up food. Task lighting is especially important in the kitchen as many dangerous tasks are performed here. Bright localized lights layered with over head sources are a good way to shed layers of light where you need it most in the kitchen. We have a ton of kitchen pendants and recessed lighting options in our online store, you can check them out here »

BATHROOM

Like the kitchen, task lighting is just as important here as many personal grooming tasks are performed with sharp tools. Lights around and above the mirror will help cast a shadowless glow on the subject, and a main light source should also be used above the shower or tub to properly illuminate the entire area.

BEDROOM

The bedroom is a place where you want to relax and let the rest of the day melt away. In this room, choose light fixtures that can create that comfortable atmosphere that you’re shooting for.  Don’t overdo it here. Reading lamps and/or wall sconces can be placed beside the bed for extra light, and an understated chandelier or recessed cans can be used above the bed, bringing the focus to the center of the room.

LIVING ROOM

Many families spend a lot of time in the living room. Most interior designers counsel their clients to illuminate three of the four corners of the room with some sort of light source. One of the three of the corners should focus on a focal point object (example- a plant or a nice chair). Table lamps and floor lamps are a great option for this room.

Holiday Lighting

The holidays are here, time for parties and more time spent cozied up at home with bad weather.

Proper lighting can help your home feel more warm and inviting. The right fixtures and light configuration can help your room or space become more cozy. Getting the room lit up properly, without feeling like a doctor’s office or cubicle, can help you feel more comfortable at home.

Here are some tips to make your space extra cozy this holiday season:

Lamp shades can be your best friend! Lamp shades are the easiest way to shield eyes from bright bulbs, and they can even warm up a cool light bulb. Choosing the right light bulb can even make a huge difference in the feel of a space. Choose bulbs that say “warm, soft light” on them instead of “cool” ones.

homePendant2Installing dimmers in your living room and bedroom can help set the mood. They are easy to install and are a great tool to easily change the feeling in a room. If you have too much natural light during the daytime, you can consider hanging window sheers to filter it better. These are also a great option for a dining room, to set a more relaxing vibe during a dinner party.

A beautiful chandelier or pendant can help create a conversation piece during holiday parties as well. Some chandeliers can even be decorated for specific holidays with different shades or colored crystals. Pendants hanging over garlands can highlight a festive table. Get creative and remember to keep the lighting level low.

Have fun this holiday season and get creative with your decor and lighting. Happy Holidays from Harold’s Lighting in Seattle, WA!

Another Custom Light Fixture Project!

One of the many things that sets Harold’s Lighting apart from other lighting stores is our custom lighting work. Our lighting experts know the ins and out of lighting and make just about any object come to “light”!

Here’s a video from a few weeks back of Tiffany, at our Seattle lighting store, working on a new custom project:

Tiffany is making some natural wood finials. She’s attaching the wood to bases of antique brass, silver and more!

Finials are the pieces that go at the top of a lamp to fasten the shade and the base together. Changing up your finial can be a great way to freshen up your fixture! Traditional finials are just caps that match the finish of the fixture but you can get them in crystal, seashell, wood, or just about any shape, symbol or finish!

Here some images of our finial case at our Seattle lighting store:

Table Lamp Rules

Finding the right table lamp can be almost as difficult as choosing what color to paint your walls. When you bring home the one you picked one out it just seems a little too small or somewhat out of place. Knowing what to look for before you shop is the key to making this process go smoothly.

Typically, most interior designers say to find a table lamp that is around 30 inches tall. This is from the bottom of the base to the top of the actual shade. If you really want to get an accurate measurement, you’ll want to pick a lamp that is around 58-64 inches from the ground in the room you’re looking to place it in. So you’ll want to measure the distance between the height of the table and the ground, then use the difference to find the height of lamp to look for.

Once you get the measurements down, the lamp shade should sit at about eye level for the average person. This will help diffuse direct light to the eye by still shedding enough light on items below the shade.

The width of the lamp can vary quite a bit, and typically just comes down to your preferred style. A skinnier lamp is a bit more delicate while a wide base can look modern and sturdy. Typically the wider the better, but you don’t want to overwhelm the table space with too much lamp. Most designers stick to shades no larger than half the table width.
