Another Custom Light Fixture Project!

One of the many things that sets Harold’s Lighting apart from other lighting stores is our custom lighting work. Our lighting experts know the ins and out of lighting and make just about any object come to “light”!

Here’s a video from a few weeks back of Tiffany, at our Seattle lighting store, working on a new custom project:

Tiffany is making some natural wood finials. She’s attaching the wood to bases of antique brass, silver and more!

Finials are the pieces that go at the top of a lamp to fasten the shade and the base together. Changing up your finial can be a great way to freshen up your fixture! Traditional finials are just caps that match the finish of the fixture but you can get them in crystal, seashell, wood, or just about any shape, symbol or finish!

Here some images of our finial case at our Seattle lighting store:

Table Lamp Rules

Finding the right table lamp can be almost as difficult as choosing what color to paint your walls. When you bring home the one you picked one out it just seems a little too small or somewhat out of place. Knowing what to look for before you shop is the key to making this process go smoothly.

Typically, most interior designers say to find a table lamp that is around 30 inches tall. This is from the bottom of the base to the top of the actual shade. If you really want to get an accurate measurement, you’ll want to pick a lamp that is around 58-64 inches from the ground in the room you’re looking to place it in. So you’ll want to measure the distance between the height of the table and the ground, then use the difference to find the height of lamp to look for.

Once you get the measurements down, the lamp shade should sit at about eye level for the average person. This will help diffuse direct light to the eye by still shedding enough light on items below the shade.

The width of the lamp can vary quite a bit, and typically just comes down to your preferred style. A skinnier lamp is a bit more delicate while a wide base can look modern and sturdy. Typically the wider the better, but you don’t want to overwhelm the table space with too much lamp. Most designers stick to shades no larger than half the table width.

Custom Gonzaga BBall Signed Lamp!

We had a customer recently bring in one of our favorite custom lamp projects! She brought in a Gonzaga basketball signed by the 2017 Gonzaga Men’s Basketball players, and wanted us to create a custom lamp base to display the piece of memorabilia. She’s planning on giving it to her grandson as a gift. That’s one lucky grandson! We’re sure he’ll cherish this gift and pass it along to his kids someday.

Lighting Your Home Office

Many people these days are starting to work from home part time, if not full time. We love the idea of being able to roll out of bed and get some work done, all while wearing your pajamas! Many times people have a hard time adjusting to working from home and good time management skills are a must-have. Having a proper home office space can help you stay focused and be as productive as possible while still being pants optional!

Depending on the size of the home office, different types of lighting layers should be used to be able to adjust accordingly to each occasion. We recommend having at least two different types of lighting, the most popular (and important) being ambient and task lighting.

desk lamp

Ambient lighting in a home office is important. If done correctly it can help illuminate the entire room without causing any glares or without pulling your eye to a certain area. Common types of ambient lighting options in a home office would be recessed light cans in the ceiling or a flush mounted fixture. If the room is small enough, a large pendant or drum may give off sufficient ambient light as well.

floorlamp

Task lighting is equally as important as ambient. Proper illumination of the tasks you are planning to perform in this area is key to working productively. If you’re unable to easily see what you’re doing you’ll waste time in the long run. Common types of task lighting in home offices are typically desk lamps, table lamps, and pendants. Desk lamps come in many different styles and can easily be adjusted to provide the proper amount of light needed. A pendant is commonly installed above a desk or reading space to provide a convenient light source where high activity traffic may occur.

Once you’ve got both ambient and task lighting down in your home office you can consider adding in other types if the space allows for it. Keep your proportions in mind and remember where your high traffic activity locations are and focus there. Ask a Harold’s lighting expert if you need help choosing the right fixture for your space today!
