Lighting Tips – Room by Room

Not all rooms are treated equally in the eyes of an interior designer. Especially when lighting is being considered. Special attention needs to be given to each space. Layers of light sources are typically used in every room, but the overall goals may be different. Below is a few tips to keep in mind when thinking about the lighting in each room.

DINING ROOM

The dining room table should be the focus. Light should be used to draw people in. Placing a light directly above the table will help bring the focus to the center and using a dimmer can help create a mood.

KITCHEN

As Americans, we spend a ton of time in room. Preparing food, eating food, and cleaning up food. Task lighting is especially important in the kitchen as many dangerous tasks are performed here. Bright localized lights layered with over head sources are a good way to shed layers of light where you need it most in the kitchen. We have a ton of kitchen pendants and recessed lighting options in our online store, you can check them out here »

BATHROOM

Like the kitchen, task lighting is just as important here as many personal grooming tasks are performed with sharp tools. Lights around and above the mirror will help cast a shadowless glow on the subject, and a main light source should also be used above the shower or tub to properly illuminate the entire area.

BEDROOM

The bedroom is a place where you want to relax and let the rest of the day melt away. In this room, choose light fixtures that can create that comfortable atmosphere that you’re shooting for.  Don’t overdo it here. Reading lamps and/or wall sconces can be placed beside the bed for extra light, and an understated chandelier or recessed cans can be used above the bed, bringing the focus to the center of the room.

LIVING ROOM

Many families spend a lot of time in the living room. Most interior designers counsel their clients to illuminate three of the four corners of the room with some sort of light source. One of the three of the corners should focus on a focal point object (example- a plant or a nice chair). Table lamps and floor lamps are a great option for this room.

If you’re building a new home, or just looking to update your home, keep these lighting tips in mind while reviewing each room in your house.

Our lighting store in Seattle has plenty of modern lighting options to choose from and we can even make custom shades and fixtures in shop. If coming in isn’t your style, shop online for light fixtures here.

Another Custom Light Fixture Project!

One of the many things that sets Harold’s Lighting apart from other lighting stores is our custom lighting work. Our lighting experts know the ins and out of lighting and make just about any object come to “light”!

Here’s a video from a few weeks back of Tiffany, at our Seattle lighting store, working on a new custom project:

Tiffany is making some natural wood finials. She’s attaching the wood to bases of antique brass, silver and more!

Finials are the pieces that go at the top of a lamp to fasten the shade and the base together. Changing up your finial can be a great way to freshen up your fixture! Traditional finials are just caps that match the finish of the fixture but you can get them in crystal, seashell, wood, or just about any shape, symbol or finish!

Here some images of our finial case at our Seattle lighting store:

Who knew there were so many ways to customize a light fixture?!

Custom Gonzaga BBall Signed Lamp!

We had a customer recently bring in one of our favorite custom lamp projects! She brought in a Gonzaga basketball signed by the 2017 Gonzaga Men’s Basketball players, and wanted us to create a custom lamp base to display the piece of memorabilia. She’s planning on giving it to her grandson as a gift. That’s one lucky grandson! We’re sure he’ll cherish this gift and pass it along to his kids someday.

Check out a Facebook Live Video we did featuring the project here:

Lighting Basics Broken Down!

When you break down the most important rules and basics for lighting design, and stick to them, your home lighting job will become a lot easier. The overwhelming task of making sure your space is appropriate illuminated can be a breeze if you just follow the easy guide laid out below.

Planning out the lighting in your home is crucial to setting the right mood. You want your home to feel warm and inviting – and lighting should be your first step to achieve this goal. Lighting should come first, then color scheme (paint, furniture, floor coverings and artwork), and then textiles and textures. Lighting isn’t a permanent decision, and oftentimes can be changed up to freshen up a space. This can be done seasonally, yearly, or just whenever you feel the need for change!

As always, layered lighting sources can help you switch up and create different moods for a space. Ambient, task and accent lighting should be used together to achieve a good balance for any activity needed to be performed in the room.

Every room or space should be considered separately. Think about what the main function of the space will most likely be and go from there. For example, the lighting needs in a hallway are much different than in the kitchen or bathroom. Keep a mental (or physical) list of individual tasks that will be routinely performed in the space and plan accordingly.
