This is what we were doing last year, yesterday:

Harold’s was LIVE on Facebook! Just another rainy Saturday in the Seattle lighting shop! Watch Cheryl in receiving while Kim takes us on a tour of our lighting store! This year doesn’t look much different, aside from a ton of new shades, modern pendants, chandeliers, lamps and sconces in our showroom! You gotta come check out the new light fixtures, shades and accessories we have in stock.

Oh the memories!

While we were traveling down memory lane, we found another Facebook LIVE video from early 2017. This time, a full tour of our Seattle Lighting Showroom!

Happy Valentine’s Day From Harold’s Lighting!

It can be argued that Valentine’s Day is just a dumb holiday made up by corporations in order to make an extra buck. That may be true, but what good does it do dwelling on it? We like think of this fun holiday as a good time to think about the people we love in our lives and to show appreciation for them. Whether or not you have a special someone right now, we bet you can think of someone in your life that is special to you. Today is the day to let them know how grateful you are they are in your life!

Now, while we’re on the subject, we’d be missing a big opportunity to talk about romance. Romance and lighting that is! Surprisingly, proper lighting can go a long way in setting the mood! Here are a few tips on how you can set the mood with lighting:

Dimmers

Installing dimmers can be the easiest way to help set the mood. The most popular rooms to have these install are the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. These rooms need lots of light to perform tasks (kitchen, and bathroom especially), so having the ability to dim after the tasks have been performed is key. Read our post about the reasons to install a dimmer here »

Dim lighting is important not only in the home. Notice the lighting in your favorite restaurants next time you’re out and about… we bet they aren’t lit up like a cafeteria!

Colored Lights

Different colored lights, when done correctly, can look amazing. They can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Look for colored bulbs or lamp shades that give off warm and flattering light. Please be careful in this realm! Colored lights can go tacky if not done correctly. Ask a lighting professional at Harold’s Lighting in Seattle for help if in doubt!

Wall Sconces

Wall sconces are a great way to add a layer of light that adds warmth to a space. Wall sconces can bounce light off walls and create flattering shadows. Using just the sconces as a lighting layer can create a romantic feel as the perimeter of a room is lit while the center is darker, which makes things feel more cozy.

While trying to create an overall warmer and romantic atmosphere remember these things:

  • COLOR TEMPERATURE: Keep the temperature of your bulbs warm. Stay away from “cool” lighting and look for more yellow undertones instead of blue.
  • BRIGHTNESS: You want to keep the brightness down, but still be able to see. Think “candlelight” when trying to achieve the right level of illumination.
  • CONTRAST: Contrast can also be used to set the mood. There shouldn’t be harsh transitions from room to room from bright to dim. The eyes should feel comfortable, and this can be done with smooth transitions. Keep the light sources in places where people are, like the dining table, while the rest of the room is kept just a little darker.

If you’re looking to set the mood, or just to make your home feel more relaxing, keep the above mentioned tips in mind. Ask a professional at our Seattle lighting store if you have any questions about what fixtures to get, how to install anything, or if you have a custom lighting idea you’d like to run by us!

Modern Branch Chandeliers

Chandeliers or pendants with “branches” are popping up in every modern home around the country, and we can see why! These beautiful, modern light fixtures add depth and interest to any space. Interior designers are loving the versatility of these fixtures, and are putting them in just about every room of the house. Our lighting showroom in Seattle has tons of these modern light fixtures in person, and we also have an extensive selection of branch chandeliers online.

Restaurants, hotels, and homeowners are mixing these modern chandeliers and pendants with industrial touches to create a cozy space with a retro feel. We love the mid century modern throwback feel these chandeliers and pendants give off.
